Dear Neighbor:
Unfortunately, the "Big Box" ordinance was approved by the City Council on July 26th despite vocal opposition from the Mayor, myself
and 13 of my colleagues.
Supporters of the ordinance dismissed warnings that this legislation would drive business out of the city as well as stop new businesses from moving
in. But in the two weeks since the ordinance passed, Target and Lowe's have announced that they are suspending plans to build new stores in several of the city's poorest neighborhoods creating a lose-lose situation for both unions and workers. The good news is that Mayor Daley is considering exercising
his authority to veto this legislation. But he needs to know that he has your strong support.
Please use the form to the right to tell me what you think about the possibility of a "Big Box" ordinance veto. I will share your feedback with the Mayor as well as my fellow Aldermen.
As a strong supporter of the right of workers to organize,
I believe we should put aside our differences in this local debate and work together
to lobby Congress to increase the minimum wage nationwide. I want you to know that
I support unions, but I believe the Big Box ordinance will ultimately hurt unions,
not help them.
What are your thoughts on this difficult issue? I look forward
to reading your comments and opinions.
Alderman Burton F. Natarus, 42nd Ward
