42nd Ward (Loop, Near North and West):
Organized labor is pouring great sums of money into a campaign to defeat Ald. Burton Natarus. There's only one reason: to claim a high-profile victory over someone who stood with Mayor Richard Daley to oppose the job-killing "big-box" ordinance.
To be alderman of the 42nd Ward is akin to being mayor of a medium-size city: the booming Loop, North Michigan Avenue, Streeterville, River North and the Gold Coast. Natarus can be eccentric, cranky and, sometimes, outrageous, but his judgment on what's right for this teeming area tends to be sound. He expertly guides complex zoning and development issues. He is justly proud of bringing 32 acres of new park land to the ward.
Natarus has a capable opponent in Brendan Reilly, Midwest vice president of public affairs for AT&T and a former aide to House Speaker Michael Madigan. Reilly, who is making his first run for elected office, has been involved in political campaigns, but he seems to have had scant involvement in local community efforts. Now here's the odd thing: he agrees with Natarus that the big-box ordinance is a bad idea. So why would labor pour thousands of dollars into his campaign? To punish Natarus. That would be bad for Chicago. Natarus is endorsed.

42nd: All the good incumbent Burton Natarus has done for his upscale downtown ward is sometimes overshadowed by his colorful crusades, which include controlling dogs ("Dog-do," he said, memorably, "is the caviar of rats") and cell phone use by drivers. But he has earned his keep by promoting renewal, going to bat for schools and helping push through ordinances prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and landlords from disallowing the placement of mezuzas on doorposts. He is endorsed over former Michael Madigan aide Brendan Reilly, a strong challenger who will be heard from in the future.
Both of Chicago's major newspapers understand Natarus's commitment to our community and the importance of his re-election.
